Help Your Little One Sleep Better and Longer
The adjustment to Standard time comes on Sunday, November 3th.
It’s almost time to fall back! My favorite time. I know, I may be crazy, but I enjoy the beautiful fall colors and the cozy nights. It’s time to pull out your sweaters and rain/snow boots. Time to start looking at soup recipes and fall produce meals. Have you researched your local pumpkin patch to take the little ones to? Honestly, I don’t have “little ones” anymore but my husband and I enjoy a date day at a harvest festival. If you can bundle up and get outside the crisp air and fall/winter sunlight will help with those winter blues.
Have you started thinking about the time change? I have a few pointers to help your family with a smooth transition back to standard time. If you are a stay-at-home parent, you can make the transition slow by pushing meals, naps, and BT later by 15 mins every 2-3 days a week prior. For older kiddos (2-3yo+) you can push everything 30mins later and may not need to start the adjustment until Thursday or Friday before the time change. For kiddos going to daycare/school, you will need to start the transition Friday night (11/1) before the time change (11/3). You can start with 15 mins later BT on Friday night, then Saturday, morning start to push meals and naps later by the full 30 mins, then Saturday night keep with the 30 mins later BT. Sunday morning you can use the new standard time to set meals and naps or if they are still adjusting, that is fine, you have the whole day and night before they head to daycare/school the next day to help them adjust. Just know that it may take up to a week for all our bodies to adjust to the new time. Be patient and give them grace. Our circadian rhythm is mostly set by light so make sure you have some light, natural if possible, first thing in the morning and in the afternoon if still available. Routines and meals also help to set our circadian rhythm so continue with your set routines and meals.
Good luck and remember to try to enjoy all the beautiful changes that fall brings.
Sleep Well!
